Irbesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) commonly used for high blood pressure and to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and protein in the urine. You might hear it called Avapro (a brand name) or simply "generic irbesartan." It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood flows easier and the heart doesn’t have to work as hard.

Irbesartan can interact with other drugs. Avoid combining it freely with potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, or potassium-sparing diuretics without medical advice — they can raise potassium too high. NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) can make its blood-pressure effect weaker and may affect kidneys. Lithium levels can rise when taken with ARBs, so that needs close monitoring.
