Irbesartan — what it does, how to take it, and what to watch for

Irbesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) commonly used for high blood pressure and to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and protein in the urine. You might hear it called Avapro (a brand name) or simply "generic irbesartan." It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood flows easier and the heart doesn’t have to work as hard.

How irbesartan works & when it's used

Doctors prescribe irbesartan mainly for two reasons: to lower blood pressure and to slow kidney damage in diabetes. It’s a once‑daily pill for most people. Compared with older drugs, ARBs tend to cause fewer coughs and similar protection for the heart and kidneys.

Not everyone should take it. Irbesartan is not safe during pregnancy — it can harm the fetus. If you’re pregnant or planning to become pregnant, tell your clinician right away. Also avoid it if you have a history of angioedema after an ARB or ACE inhibitor.

Dose, side effects, interactions, and smart tips

Typical starting dose is 150 mg once a day for adults with high blood pressure. Some patients start at 300 mg daily or are stepped up to 300 mg if needed. Your doctor will pick a dose based on your blood pressure, kidney function, and other meds.

Common side effects are dizziness, tiredness, and sometimes stomach upset. More serious issues include high potassium (hyperkalemia) and changes in kidney function. Watch for fainting, swelling of the face or throat, or sudden trouble breathing — those need emergency care.

Irbesartan can interact with other drugs. Avoid combining it freely with potassium supplements, salt substitutes containing potassium, or potassium-sparing diuretics without medical advice — they can raise potassium too high. NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) can make its blood-pressure effect weaker and may affect kidneys. Lithium levels can rise when taken with ARBs, so that needs close monitoring.

Before starting, your doctor will likely check your blood pressure, kidney function (creatinine), and potassium level. Repeat checks happen after a few weeks and then periodically. If you feel dizzy when standing, rise slowly and report it — your dose or other medicines might need adjusting.

Buy irbesartan only with a prescription. If you shop online, use a licensed pharmacy and check reviews and contact details. Generic irbesartan is widely available and usually cheaper than brand name.

When to call your doctor: severe dizziness, fainting, swelling of the face or throat, very reduced urine output, or symptoms like muscle weakness and fast heartbeat (possible high potassium). For mild side effects or questions about combining with other meds, call your clinic — don’t stop the drug suddenly without advice.

Want quick help? Bring a list of all your medicines and recent lab results to your next appointment. That makes it faster to find a safe dose and avoid interactions.
